Emmitt

2 1/2 weeks ago we took Emmitt to the vet because of a mysterious bump that appeared on his forehead, just above his left eye. At first, we thought maybe had a been stung by a bee or something, but when it did not go away in a couple of days we knew it was time to see the doctor...

The doctor was certain it was a cyst that he could drain, so the next time we brought Emmitt back for the procedure. Not only was the anesthesia awful for our sweet 14 year old guy, but the cyst was not a cyst. After looking at a sample of it under the microscope, the doctor felt certain it was a tumor and sent another sample off to the lab.

And so began our wait for the pathology results....  nothing as of Wednesday when everything closed for Easter, but at that point, he was doing ok.....

But last night things took a turn. The tumor has continued to grow and is pressing more and more on his eye, to the point that last night he could barely open it. And now this morning, his balance is VERY off. He seems to be losing his grip in his front feet so that he is slipping and sliding while trying to sit and eat....
And the vet is not back until Tuesday.
And taking him to the on-call vet won't help because without those lab results, they cannot fix this.

It is BREAKING my heart. Mads', too.
Emmitt has been with me for fourteen years.
We have been through so many things together and I cannot fathom losing him.
And the worst part is watching him deal with this because he is just not himself.

I know that only other pet owners can understand that he is not "just a cat".
And how much this hurts.

Ahhh sweetie, my heart goes out to you and Mads. But especially you, I know Emmitt´s been the man in your life for 14 years and as you said, you´ve been through so much together. I am so sorry that he is struggling. I know you would want nothing more then to give him a worthy ending if that is the way things are headed and perhaps that is what you can give him if you have to go to the on call vet (if he gets even worse before Tuesday) Regardless, that decision is NEVER easy and my heart breaks just thinking of how hard this is for you. Please know you and Emmitt are in my thoughts and prayers..a big warm hug to you my dear friend...

I just came across you blog and I'm so sorry it was during such a sad time for you and your little kitty. I hope things improve for the little man, I know how horrid it is to watch your animals get sick and being able to do so little about it. At least you are at home, and at least he knows your there - I'm sure thats not a lot of comfort right now for you but it probably is for him.

Perhaps you could take him to the emergency vet and try to make him more comfortable? That would help ease your feelings a little.

I can't even begin to imagine the sorrow and heartbreak you're going through. Emmitt is a beloved member of the family.

Hugs to you all.

Kelli and Mads,

I am so sorry about Emmitt. I really hope Emmitt can hang in there until Tuesday. Maybe you can hold him while he eats?

I know it hurts. My dog passed in October and I still cry every day. They truly are our families, and I really hope and pray Emmitt pulls through. Hugs to Emmitt, you and Mads.

I'd take Emmitt to the on-call vet. Whatever the lab work says isn't really important if the vet can treat the symptoms. Besides, you do not want to see Emmitt suffer for 3 more days. Remember that cats have whiskers above their eyes, and whiskers are one of the things that helps cats maintain their balance. It could be that the tumor is displacing his whiskers, plus he can't open his eye all the way, so that could be why he isn't walking/ balancing properly. Please keep us posted. Love you!
