Xenophobia

Have you heard of this book? I received it as a gift before I moved to DK (in order to help me learn everything I need to know about the Danes so I could be happy in my new country....)

I showed this book to one of my classes as we were studying the idea of xenophobia in US History (as we were reading Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" together)...and they were really interested to find out what the author had said about them (especially since the author is not a Dane!) However, before I showed them the book's contents, I asked them to make their own "Xenophobe's Guide to the Danes"... including all the things they think are important for immigrants to Denmark to know and understand in order to have a successful life here.

I was really impressed with their work that they handed in and although I have lived in Denmark almost 2 years, they ended up teaching me lots of things! So without knowledge of this book, can you guess what they wrote in their personal Xenophobe's Guide to the Danes?

I guess learn Danish, eat like a Dane and drink like a Dane;)

My friend showed me that book so I find it unfair to generalize the whole population based on the experiences.

Maybe I'll give the book a try.

Hehe...my boyfriend gave me this book before I visited Denmark for the first time! The comment I find most hilarious is probably the one saying something along the lines of that pitying the poor souls who were not lucky to be born Danish...and I agree...they do (in a positive way) :D

No clue what they wrote, but I'm loving the pig on the cover.

I'm hoping they said something about not comparing DK to anywhere else and just learning to accept the Danish way of doing things...

I have the same book about the Swedes... it's funny and tongue in cheek...

The Culture Shock books are similar but a bit more meaty.

Did they come up with:

If you are a Dane, it is important to mark your territory to foreigners. The best way to do this is by peeing on the side of the road. Doing it in close proximity to airports is a very good idea, as it tells all foreigners "Back off...you are in Viking country!"
