Sukker?? Sugar??

De er ikke kokosnød.
De er ikke elefants eller næsehorns lort.
De er ikke blomsterløg.
Og de er ikke Jicama.
Men alle var gode gætter!

They are not coconuts.
They are not elephant or rhino poop.
They are not flower bulbs.
And they are not Jicama.
But all of these are great guesses!

De er..... SUKKERROE!
They are....SUGAR BEETS!

I certainly never expected a country as cold as Denmark to have sugar beets, but in my research I found out that the three places that export most of the world's sugar beets are the US, Russia, and the EU.... I had expected much warmer places like Jamaica! In Denmark we have lots and the ones we saw that day in the forest had been set out for the deer since there was so much snow on the ground...just in case they got hungry!

I imagine the warmer climes are growing sugar cane. During my first months in Okinawa I mistook cane fields for corn.

I think sub-tropical and tropical places usually grow sugarcane instead of sugar beets.
Brazil produces about one-third of the world's sugarcane, followed by India, China, Thailand, Pakistan and Mexico.
Bazil use a lot of sugarcane to make bio-ethanol fuel. Brazil is the world's second largest producer of ethanol fuel.

But I don't suppose those were set out for the deer so the deer could be shot more easily?

I still think they may be coconuts. You know, based on my vast knowledge of biology, foodology, and Denmarkology...

I think you'll find that Jamaica is one of the world's major producers of sugar _cane_.

The only reason we grow suger beets in Denmark, is because the industry is heavilly subsidized(spelling?).

Basically, the farmers only survive because the EU supports them.
