Mere ting at ved i Dansk... More things to know i Danish

I first discovered "the alternate names" given to American books and movies soon after I met Mads in 2006. We had been talking about our favorite movies and he told me that "A world outside" was on his "TOP TEN" list. Of course, I translated each word literally and had NO IDEA what movie this was. The next day on Skpye, he showed me the movie jacket and I knew! "But," I asked him. "Who changed the name to The World Outside? It makes no sense!" However, ever since "A world outside", I have found many many alternate names for American books and movies. Sommetider I understand the new name they chose, but other times, I have NO CLUE! I also don´t understand why some movie and film titles DON´T change??!

Yesterday I took my camera to Kvickly to do a little research and here is what I found...

Grey´s Anatomy har blevet Greys Hvide Verden
Grey´s Anatomy has become Grey´s White World

men Desperate Housewives navn har ikke skiftet.
but Desperate Housewives title has not changed.

Tom Hanks og Meg Ryan stadig "FIK POST" på Dansk... Tom Hanks og Meg Ryan still "Got Mail" in Danish...

men John Cusack og Kate Beckinsale fandt "Lunefulde Lykke" på Dansk... but John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale found "Unpredictable Happiness" in Danish.

This movie would be SO EASY to change literally--Change WAR to KRIG, but it does not change in Danish!

Hver kvinde i Amerika kendte allerede denne!
and now, Patrick Dempsey is "a real man"....Every woman in America already knew this!

Each day, I find new things about Danish... sometimes I "get it quickly"...sometimes I just laugh because it sounds so funny to me... and sometimes, I just shake my head and sigh! But I keep learning more every day, whether I want to or not! :o)

same here, I am still confused why they changed Cinderella into Askepot and Winnie the Pooh into Peter Plys

Yep - they change the names here in Sweden too. And usually the name reveals the whole plot of the film and can be a real spoiler!

The Cinderella I can explain. The old nordic version of the fairy tale is called Ashenputtel in German, hence the Danish Askepot. The story is a bit different from the U.S. version, as there is no fairy godmother, but instead the birthmother's spirit represented by birds (doves).

As for Winnie the Pooh, the only thing I can think about is Winnie being a girl's name in Denmark.

But that still doesn't explain Anders And (Donald Duck), Fedtmule (Goofy) and all the others. :)
