Føler hjæpløs ... Feeling helpless

Last night I understood fully how it feels to be away from family. I miss them all everyday, but you do not realize how 5000 miles feel until something bad happens. Mads, Jess, Stephen and I went to my inlaw´s for dinner last night. Around 7pm my phone rang....it was my sister. Her first question was "Have you talked to mom?" and my stomach suddenly felt sick because I was afraid something had happened to MoMo. I was not ready for what she told me.

Yesterday my dad had a heart attack. My mom took him to the hospital in Allen and after only a few minutes, the doctors said he needed to be in the cardiac hospital in McKinney immediately because he needed an operation. They took him to McKinney by careflight and soon after, he was in surgery.

One side had 100% blockage and they put 3 stints in to open it, but they could not open the other side. When I called my mom after his surgery, he was in recovery and I got to talk with him for a few minutes. I have never heard him sound weak before... My sister arrived in McKinney soon after, so thankfully my mom was not alone and they promised to call me as soon as the doctor came with more news.

At 1am this morning my mom called me because the heart doctor had just come. He showed my mom and sister the xrays from before and after the surgery and the one side looked MUCH better. However he was worried about the other side because he wanted to do angioplast on that side, but he was not sure my dad´s heart could survive the procedure. He told them he is working with another heart doctor today (Saturday) to decide what is best. If angioplast is not right for him, he will have open heart surgery in ten days. They must wait ten days because he is on blood thinner medicine to prevent another heart attack. We will know more today, after the doctors decide what to do...

He is VERY healthy...he eats great, he walks the golf course many times a week and he is in great shape, but the doctor said this was probably hereditary; not from food or exercise. He also said my dad was very lucky because with 100% blockage, this could have been much worse. He told my mom, "Someone must be looking out for him." I will write more when I know more....

Kelli know exactly how you feel and it's so hard not feeling a bit guilty - at least in my case. My father is not getting any younger and I know there is a possibility something will happen to him over here. Same for NQDII's parents. I don't know what to say because it really is a nightmare come true and I'm sorry it has happened to you - and you Dad. Still, it sounds like he is doing quite well in the circumstances. I think one consolation is I am sure he is happy that you are happy here and I think that is what parents wish for most.

NQD--thank you for your words. I know that so many other expats feel this very same way. And you are def. right about him wanting me to be happy. He and my mom both knew that Mads was the one which is why they have been so supportive of my move. They realize that I have finally found what the 2 of them have together.... so I just have to trust I am in the right place and that things are going to be ok.... but I am used to being the BIG SISTER who is in charge everytime something happens... guess this will teach me a humbling lesson as well...

I hope your dad will recover soon. I know that feeling, sometimes I wonder if my parents are all alright back home because they're old too and I am afraid something bad happen and that I just can't get home just like in a snap of fingers

I wish your dad a speedy recovery. I know how much it sucks to not be able to be there but luckily you have a sibling that can help and I'm sure he has many positive thoughts moving in his direction that will help him recover.
Stay strong! :)

I am so sorry to hear this! I can't even imagine how it feels to be so far from your father now.

It sounds like he has the general health needed to get through it in the best possible way.
