Dag 4--vores først dag i Amsterdam … Day 4--our first day in Amsterdam

We flew from Copenhagen airport early Sunday and arrived in Amsterdam, ready for our first day in the capital city of the Netherlands. After only a few hours, I was sure Amsterdam is the city of CANALS, BIKES and DREADLOCKS. These three things are everywhere!

We took the train to our hotel and received a surprise when we arrived! On the hotel´ s homepage, many people wrote comments about the hotel , saying it was a “charming, very European hotel with friendly owners, but the stairs were very very steep”….and they were RIGHT! Jess and I were lucky to have two strong men to bring our suitcases upstairs!!

Our first day in Amsterdam was great. We took a canal tour around the city in order to have an idea about everything we wanted to see and do. We quickly saw how amazing Amsterdam´s architecture was with very tall, narrow houses which usually had four, five or six stories! To me, the most interesting thing about each house was the door. EACH DOOR is different. They are made from wood with unique designs on each. I wanted to take pictures of all of them. Also, every house has a hook on the roof from three or four hundred years ago because it was used to move things such as furniture to the top floors, and they are still used today. The whole city of Amsterdam is built on water and we learned that every house and office sits on wooden beams sixteen meters under the ocean´s floor. Today, many houses are shifting and you can see how they are tilting to one side. Two houses began side by side 300 years ago, but now, they have spaces between them.

Wow, Kelli, Amsterdam looks very interesting. By the way, you definitely need to get Mads to the Grand Canyon. What a WONDER!
